Registering with the Ministry of Health’s Children’s Spectacle Subsidy service: Information for Optometrists and Ophthalmologists

Enable New Zealand administers the Children’s Spectacle Subsidy service on behalf of the New Zealand Ministry of Health. Optometrists or Ophthalmologists who wish to use the Children’s Spectacle Subsidy service must be registered with Enable New Zealand:

• as an Approved Assessor under the Ministry of Health Equipment Modification Services (EMS) Assessor Accreditation Framework, and
• to use Enable Online with RTL to claim for payment.

The Children’s Spectacle Subsidy is a Ministry of Health contribution intended to help families with the cost of certain vision services for eligible children 15 years of age and under. Visit the Ministry of Health website for more information.

Register as an EMS Approved Assessor

EMS Approved Assessors are authorised to apply for Ministry of Health funding for equipment for people eligible for disability support services. To register as an EMS Assessor you will need to apply via EMS Assessor Online. This is a database managed by Enable New Zealand.

Access to Enable Specs App

Once you have registered as an EMS Approved Assessor you will receive a login and password to access Enable Specs App (which goes live on the 4th of June). This web-based service allows you to claim the spectacle subsidy for your client. It also ensures that spectacle subsidy claims meet Ministry of Health eligibility criteria.
